The gift from the people of France to the people of the USA, the Statue of Liberty is the most recognized symbol for freedom & liberty in the world.
17th to 19th centuries witnessed fierce competition & numerous wars between European neighbors, Britain, and France to colonize the world and to control the world trade. As a part of this, Kingdom of France extended overt & covert military support to the thirteen colonies on the eastern coast of the present-day USA to declare Independence from Britain. In the ensuing war (American war of Independence) the colonies won the war with the help of France. This military association is the backdrop for the gift of the Statue of Liberty to the USA.
The statue was designed and fabricated in segments in France and transported to New York in a big vessel/barge. The main architect/ sculptor of the statue, Bartholdi modified the design of the flame many times before settling for the present one and modelled the face of the statue of his mother. Total height of the statue including the pedestal is 93 meters.
Liberty island houses a liberty museum, and the statute is in the waters of New Jersey.
Ellis Island where the American museum of Immigration is located is adjacent to Liberty Island. During the early phases of immigration to New York, all immigrants were taken to this island for immigration and health checkups before letting them in to the USA. Now the island is a tourist spot exhibiting the halls and documents of the early immigration era.
To compensate the missed chance of visiting the liberty and Ellis Islands during our last visit, this time, we stayed in the islands for long and the photographs taken are shared here with.
